Missing Middle Housing

A key part of solving
Calgary’s Housing Crisis.

CivicWorks champions the delivery of Missing Middle Housing forms in Calgary.

Missing Middle Housing refers to a range of grade-oriented house-scale buildings with multiple units that are compatible with other low density built forms. These housing options are missing because they have often been prohibited or limited by land use rules and zoning across Canada since the 1940s and are situated in the middle of a housing spectrum between single/semi-detached homes and apartments in terms of height, mass, number of units, and affordability. Missing Middle Housing is most appropriately introduced within amenity-rich, walkable, and transit-supported communities.

CivicWorks deeply believes in delivering Missing Middle Housing options in partnership with our developer-builder clients and architect partners. These projects are an excellent way to sensitively densify established neighbourhoods experiencing lifecycling of their housing stock, making more effective use of land by providing a greater variety of housing options to Calgarians of diverse family size and economic background. Missing Middle Housing has formed a significant part of the CivicWorks portfolio since 2017 and we are proud to have brought hundreds of these homes through approvals and to market.
